Nasscom and major IT companies to spread out their campus hiring over seventh and eighth semesters this year

Nasscom and major Indian IT companies have agreed to spread out their campus hiring over seventh and eighth semesters this year. They have decided to do this considering the significantly higher projected demand for talent and also to overcome the "operational difficulty" in covering hundreds of campuses in a span of two to three months.

"The industry's requirements are high and at the same time increasing dramatically. The projected requirement for next year is significantly higher than this year," said Som Mittal , president of Nasscom. "Based on their experiences, companies found that logistic costs were shooting up since they were trying to cover a huge number of campuses in a period of a few months in the eighth semester."

This is a step back from the original agreement between the various member companies of Nasscom which had decided last year that they will hire only in the middle or towards the end of the eighth semester. The reason was it ensured the continuity of education and companies hired students who had properly finished their studies. It also addressed the problem of students ignoring studies in seventh and eighth semesters after getting offer letters. Core engineering courses are taught in seventh semester and eighth semester deals with research projects.

"This time hiring will begin early, somewhere in October," said Mittal. "This is the outcome of our internal discussions. Details are still to be worked out." October falls in the middle of seventh semester. It's not only the total hiring numbers that are likely to see an increase but also the proportion of freshers hired.
